Meeting in the Ladies’ Room with TeenAngster

We approached Alison Feldmann about guest posting because she runs a blog called Teenangster (which I quite frequently visit). It is there, where I learned about Sibylle Baier and other great female musicians. Along with this, Teenangster is full of fascinating finds, vintage fashion, and other offbeat musings. We reached out to her and to our wonderment she happily agreed and gave us a plethora of music picks from her very own collection. Make sure you check up on Teenangster to see Alison’s fascinating finds and check out this well put together post on her favorite girl groups!

A little known fact about me is that I hosted an all-lady radio show during college (holla, KRUI!). From the obvious contenders like the Slits to lesser known gems from the ’60s, we focused on showcasing all of our favorite female artists on a weekly basis. Sitting behind the microphone at the radio station, slipping scratched CDs into the stereo, it was easy to imagine myself on the bass in a girl group — the only kind I could see myself in. Though I’ve yet to jump on stage myself, the inspiration runs deep.

While composing this list of lady music, I found my favorite solo artists much too daunting and varied to parse (Mary J.Kate BushMadonnaLene LovichNina), so I thought I’d show off some of my favorite girl groups.

First off, some late ’70s post-punk with the Mo-Dettes and Kleenex (later known as Liliput). Raw, bass-driven and sassy, these are some of my favorites of the female punk scene. (Delta 5 is also high on my list, but no videos available. Look ‘em up!)

Mo-Dettes - “White Mice”

Liliput / Kleenex - “Hedi’s Head”

The ’80s were pretty amazing for women in R&B and pop. Totally sexy. Consider these the female counterparts to Prince and Rick James. (And Prince actually did have a girl group he produced, Vanity 6. “Nasty Girl” is a classic.)

Klymaxx - “Meeting in the Ladies’ Room”

Mary Jane Girls - “All Night Long”

And obviously, the queens of the sassy serenade, Salt ‘n’ Pepa:

And what list would be complete without some Motown? Martha and the Vandellas often get overlooked in favor of the Supremes, but their harmonies: incredible. And I nurse a major girl crush on Ronnie Spector (that hair!). “Footsteps on the Roof” is another favorite.

Martha and the Vandellas - “Ready for Love”

Ronettes - “Be My Baby”
