Rosetta Tharpe was a pioneering gospel singer, songwriter and recording artist who attained great popularity in the 30’s and 40’s with a unique mixture of spiritual lyrics and early rock and roll music. She became the first great recording star of gospel music in the late 1930s and also became known as the “original soul sister” of recorded music.
Girls Rock Philly is sponsoring the dedication of an official State Historical Marker commemorating Sister Rosetta Tharpe’s Philadelphia home! Tomorrow at at 1 pm check out the official dedication at 1102 Master St. home.You can expect a program of speeches and amazing music!
Later, at 7:30pm, GRP & The Friends of Sister Rosetta Tharpe are hosting a FREE screening of the BBC documentary “Godmother Of Rock N’ Roll: Sister Rosetta Tharpe” in the auditorium at the central branch of the Free Library (1901 Vine Street).
